FAQ

No, they truly won’t. This is the biggest fear for almost everyone, but modern stoma care technology is incredibly clever.

The bags are made from quiet, soft materials that don’t rustle when you move, and they are designed with a very low profile so they lay flat against your stomach. Unless you tell someone, they will have no idea you are wearing one.

When it comes to odour, the pouch plastics are completely odour-proof. Furthermore, every modern bag has an integrated medical-grade carbon filter built right into the top. This filter lets out odour.

Looking at your stoma for the first time can be startling, but I promise you it does not hurt.

Your stoma will look like a small, round, raised piece of tissue that is bright red, warm, and moist—very much like the healthy inside of your cheek. Because it is a mucous membrane, seeing a little bit of mucus or even a tiny speck of blood when you clean it is perfectly normal and nothing to panic about.

The most reassuring thing I can tell you is that the stoma itself has absolutely no nerve endings. It cannot feel pain, it cannot feel heat, and it cannot feel cold. If you gently touch it, you won’t feel it at all. The only area we need to protect is the normal skin around the stoma, which we keep healthy by making sure your bag fits properly.

The uncomfortable/sensitive part is where the stitches are.

We will help you find a comfortable rhythm that fits into your daily routine, rather than taking it over.

If you have a drainable bag (usually for an ileostomy or temporary colostomy), you will empty it into the toilet when it gets about one-third to one-half full—usually about 3 to 5 times a day. It takes less than a minute, and it quickly becomes as automatic as washing your hands.

If you use a closed bag (often for a permanent colostomy), you will simply replace the bag 1 to 2 times a day when it fills. If you wear a two-piece system, the sticky baseplate that adheres to your skin stays on safely for 3 to 5 days, while you just snap new bags on and off as needed.

You do not have to live on a boring, restricted diet forever, but we do need to give your body a little grace period while it heals.

For the first 6 to 8 weeks after your operation, your bowel will be slightly swollen from surgery. During this short time, I will ask you to follow a gentle, low-residue (low-fiber) diet. This means focusing on soft foods like eggs, fish, white rice, and well-cooked vegetables, while avoiding things that can cause blockages like sweetcorn, nuts, popcorn, and tough fruit skins.

Make sure you chew your food incredibly well—think of your teeth as the new blender for your digestive system! After those initial two months, you can slowly reintroduce your favorite foods one by one to see how your body handles them. Your bag is tough and medically sealed; it will not burst from food.

Keeping the skin around your stoma as healthy as the skin on the rest of your body is our primary goal, and we have amazing products to help you do it.

Skin irritation happens when your output accidentally leaks and touches your bare skin, or if a bag is pulled off too aggressively. Think of it like a diaper rash—it’s uncomfortable, but highly treatable.

The secret is ensuring your baseplate is cut to the exact size and shape of your stoma so no skin is left exposed. We also have a wonderful toolkit of supporting products: barrier sprays that create a protective layer over your skin, stoma powder to heal raw patches, and moldable seals that act like a protective putty to custom-fit your body shapes. If your skin ever starts to itch or burn, it’s simply your body’s way of saying, “Let’s change the bag and check the fit.”

Yes, you absolutely can! Water is not the enemy of your stoma.

The medical adhesives used on modern stoma bags are completely water-resistant. They are specifically engineered to stay securely stuck to your skin while you shower, take a warm bath, or go swimming in a pool. You can dry the outside of the bag off with a towel afterward, or use a hair dryer on a cool setting.

In fact, if you feel up to it, you can even take your bag completely off and step into the shower naked! Plain water and mild, oil-free soap will not hurt your stoma at all, and many of my patients find the feeling of warm water running over their bare stomach to be incredibly therapeutic and refreshing.

Absolutely. A stoma is meant to save your life, not stop it.

Once your surgical incisions are fully healed (usually around 6 to 12 weeks) and I give you the official medical clearance, you can absolutely return to your job, drive your car, travel, and resume hobbies like gardening, hiking, or swimming.

The only major precaution we take is protecting your core muscles. Because your abdominal wall was opened during surgery, you are at a higher risk for a hernia (a muscle bulge) if you strain too hard. We will teach you gentle core-strengthening exercises, and if your lifestyle involves lifting, we can fit you with a comfortable, supportive abdominal support belt to keep your muscles safe while you stay active.

Gas is a completely natural byproduct of digestion, and we can manage it easily through a few lifestyle tweaks.

When your body produces gas, it flows into the bag. As we mentioned, the built-in carbon filter will automatically deodorize it and let it escape quietly on its own. However, if your filter gets wet from a shower or clogged by thick output, the gas can get trapped, causing the bag to inflate like a small balloon.

If this happens, you can simply go to the bathroom and gently “burp” the bag by opening the bottom outlet slightly (or unpeeling the top corner of a two-piece system) to let the air out safely. To minimize gas, try to avoid carbonated drinks, don’t drink through straws (which makes you swallow air), eat slowly, and limit gas-heavy foods like beans or broccoli when you are going out socialising.

Accordion

While a leak can be deeply discouraging, it is almost always a temporary technical issue that we can easily fix together.

First, remember that a leak does not mean you did anything wrong or that you are broken. It usually just means your stoma has changed size slightly as the surgical swelling goes down, and your bag template needs to be resized.

To give you your peace of mind back, we will teach you how to pack a small, discreet “emergency go-bag” containing a pre-cut bag, baby wipes, and a disposal pouch to keep in your car or handbag. For nighttime confidence, changing your bag right before bed and using a moldable barrier ring will create an extra-strong seal that keeps you secure through the night, allowing you to get the deep sleep your body needs to heal.

Content

Yes, you can. Having an ostomy does not change your worth, your beauty, or your capacity to love and be loved.

It is completely natural to worry about how a partner will react or feel nervous about physical closeness. When you feel emotionally and physically ready, open and gentle communication with your partner is key.

There are wonderful, highly practical ways to make intimacy feel comfortable and carefree. You can use smaller, low-profile closed “cap” pouches for those private moments, or wear stylish, supportive intimate wraps, high-waisted lace underwear, or patterned pouch covers that keep the bag tucked away securely out of sight. Your stoma is a small part of your body—it does not define your identity or your relationships.
